Kern Family History
Recorded in the spellings of Kern, Kerne,Kerner, Kernes, and Kearns, this is a surname of multiple national origins. Confusingly it can be German, or English-Cornish, and sometimes Irish. Equally it has multiple meanings and derivations. If German and hence Anglo-Saxon (English) it probably derives from the pre 7th century word "gern" meaning desire, and usually found in the early personal names "Gernwin and Kernwin". However the surname can also be locational from the town of Kern in Germany. If Irish and possibly Cornish, the derivation is from the pre 10th century Gaelic personal name "Ceirin" which translates as "The little black one"...Select Audience

I agree with the origin of the name: Kern comes from the DNA of Ireland. I read that the fourth tribe of the Kerns had arrived from southwest Ireland before the conquest of Cornwall. Kernow, as it was later derived, Cornwall literally means "the dweller of the headland." The Kerns were light infantry soldiers/warriors of the Gaelic tribe, described as "the hags of hell" (in reference to their fierce combat style). I studied the Gaelic tribes and is believed that the painted face warriors to attack the Romans from Scotland, Wales and Cornwall was indeed from North-western Ireland. By the 5th century, they had become the agricultural owners of the peninsula on the west coast of Cornwall, from Lands' End to Truro, and were heavily Christianized. The Kingdom of Brittany, or more precisely the Duchy of Brittany, existed as a medieval feudal state from approximately 939 to 1547; however, the migration patterns of the Celtic tribes would explain those other movements. During the Anglo-Saxon period, attempts were made to define Kernow as the foreigner of the land, in the confines of tribal survival and the battles of Cape Cornwall. Later, the names Danelagh and emerged Danelaw, eventually becoming Anglo-Norman to better describe the kingdom of Brittany.
